🌀 Three Quick Tips for Understanding The True Warrior's Approach to Self-Protection... and LIFE!
“A warrior respects his opponent’s intent to harm him — and therefore positions himself in a way that makes that as difficult as possible to carry out.”
-- Soke Masaaki Hatsumi
Welcome to this week’s Three-Tip Thursday, where I share three powerful lessons from this week’s teachings — short enough to read in
minutes, but deep enough to train for a lifetime.
This week’s quick tips come from KUDEN! Radio episode 283: “The Warrior’s Code of Respect” and Warrior’s Whiteboard Wednesday: “Respect the Threat — or Pay the Price.”
🥋 ⚔️ Tip #1: Respect Is More Than Politeness — It’s Survival
Most
students think “respect” starts and ends with bowing, or being courteous to your sensei and fellow students - using proper dojo etiquette.
But for the warrior, respect means acknowledging danger... in any situation. In fact respect was originally based on this premise, being mindful of the potential in every encounter, and acting to negate the threat-potential before it could come at you.
True "warrior respect" is shown by how you manage distance, protect your lines and weak points, and stay aware — not by how low you bow.
When you respect the attack, you train for what’s real. When you don’t… you're left training for performance and ego comfort.
🛡️ Tip #2: Respect the Attack — AND Your Attacker's INTENT to Harm You!
In the dojo, your uke helps you learn... and training with them is controlled, cooperative, and predictable.
But the real
attacker wants to break, beat, or kill you. Street reality is chaotic, resistant, and unpredictable. Your assailant willthrow everything and anything at you that he can to do that. And, he WILL press against your defenses, challenge your position, AND exploit every opening and mistake you make!
Failing to respect that intent leads to sloppy distance, open lines, lost awareness... and a FALSE
sense of confidence!
Train with partners who give you what you need at the level where you are — pressure, commitment, and honesty — not what makes you feel “good enough.”
👁️ Tip #3: Distance, Cover, and Zanshin Are Acts of Respect
Every time you move, strike, or throw - at every point in a technique - you’re showing how much (or little) you respect the threat inherent in that moment.
Maintain your cover when you strike, execute a throw,
etc.
Control the distance before you counter. And...
Never lose zanshin — awareness of his free limbs, weapons, or intent.
That’s warrior respect in action.
🎯 Ready to train these principles for real? Join me this Friday for the Advanced Ninjutsu Masterclass: “Respect the Threat — In Action!”
You’ll see exactly how to keep cover and zanshin alive during real
techniques — and how to turn respect into tactical control.
REMEMEBER: “We are either exactly what we choose to be, or exactly what we have allowed ourselves to become.”
