While most people believe that the Ninja only trained with and knew about their Ninja-to or Shinobi-gatana shorter blades, this isn't the case. In fact, the Shadow Warriors had to also know the conventional sword of the time - the Katana or what most people ca;; the "Samurai Sword."
Why?
What I learned from Hatsumi Sensei and other master teachers coming up
through the ranks on my own journey to learn this art, was that the Ninja had to KNOW the Samurai's sword and the way it was used, so they could exploit it's weaknesses and know how it was normally used - how to beat it. And, since all Ninja weapons and techniques are variations on the conventional skills... it would be really difficult to create variations of something we don't know anything about!
