Hey Warrior...

I know I don't use the word "karate" very often, even though our art was called that (and several other names) over time... because it was the one that was in fashion at any given point in Japanese history.

Hell, Takamatsu-sensei even had Hatsumi-sensei and his other students dress in Judo gi for training in post WWII Japan because of the rules imposed by the occupying forces... banning combat martial arts practice.

But, since the word itself just means "empty hand," implying the unarmed side of self-defense and personal combat... we all need to get over our attachments to our favorite words (which history would show aren't all that "traditional" after all, either! LOL)

It's myths like this one - that we do Ninjutsu and not karate - that trips a lot of really good people up.  In fact, one of these is a killer (as in, it could get you killed!)... and that is the one that says that:

"Anyone who has a black belt in a martial art can teach you how to not get beaten, broken, or killed on the street."

I talk about this one (and more) in a book I wrote a LONG time ago, called "The Karate-Myth" (renamed at one point to "The Science of Self-Defense" - but I like the first title better!).

And speaking of myths and distracting needs... ...after I wrote this, I had several people approach me and tell me how good it was... but could I write it for the Ninjutsu people?

To which I replied... It IS for Ninjutsu people!

What I learned was that what they wanted was for me to point the Japanese names of things back in, which I took out so 1) the book wouldn't be distracting to those who couldn't pronounce it (or want that kind of thing), and... 2) to focus on the principles and concepts that everyone, regardless of style or self-defense system, could use.

The funny part is that many of them said "thanks, but I just want to do things the 'traditional way.'"

So... without the ego-stroking Japanese martial arts "buzz words," they were going to pass on the knowledge and information that could make them better?  Awesome!

That mindset reminded me of several of my children during their first Christmas where they were given presents and got caught up in the pretty wrapping paper.  Then, when one of us tore the paper to show them that they were supposed to unwrap the present... they cried because we "messed up the present!"
