Prior to the mid 80's, Ninjutsu training was very different, and the kihon happo wasn't a limited list of techniques that everyone thought was easy to learn and then forget... because they wanted the next cool move or three.  The term itself referred to a principle for expanding the number of your techniques through understanding the principles and concepts taught by the models being used.  AND... the models were often switched out for one another because... (wait for it...)... they weren't the important part of the training!
