Ninja Seishin Question: Why do we do what we do?

In the Togakure-Ryu-ha's 18 levels of Ninja training, the first level is known as Seishin Teki Kyoyo: 'Personal Clarity.'
The Japanese word, Seishin, is another one of those that are not easily defined in a word or two. It could mean psyche, soul, heart, mind, etc. But...
...it can also mean or point to "intention..." your intent behind why you do what you do.
Why you believe what you do.
Why and when you will act, or not act.
One of the things I've found over my short 60 years is that it's easy for us to focus outside ourselves - to try to figure out the other person, their motives, beliefs, and whether or not they're walking their talk... or full of BS.
However, I was taught that the Ninja's seishin teki leads the list because the shadow warrior must know themselves... know when and why they will use their skills... and for whom.
Again, in my personal work in this area, what I found was that, to do that, I had to look beyond my wants, needs, desires, anger, and such to be able to learn about my perceptions, beliefs, and where they came from...
...to make sure that I was actually operating from a place of clarity - whether or not I was looking at what was actually there in front of me, and understood how it actually worked...
...or was I looking in one of those funhouse mirrors - one of those warped mirrors that completely distort what was reflected in them.
Interesting, no?
